Diverticulitis Video Testimonial by Lorna

March 31st, 2009 -- Posted in Diverticulitis | No Comments »

Many people have small pouches in their colons that bulge outward through weak spots, like an inner tube that pokes through weak places in a tire. Each pouch is called a diverticulum. Pouches (plural) are called diverticula. The condition of having diverticula is called diverticulosis. About 10 percent of Americans over the age of 40 have diverticulosis. The condition becomes more common as people age. About half of all people over the age of 60 have diverticulosis. When the pouches become …

What is the difference between constipation and severe constipation?

March 31st, 2009 -- Posted in Constipation | 1 Comment »

I want to know what is the difference between constipation and severe constipation, as far as definition. causes and symptoms.

Thank you

Constipation is where you have to strain to get the stool out.

Severe constipation is where you need to take medical or physical action to empty the bowel.

Both have the same essential cause which is slowed transit time in the bowel leading to dehydrated, hardened stools.

Here is the link to the bristol stool chart - with sufficient fluids and fibre a normal stool is a 3, 4 or 5.

What kind of laxatives can you take while pregnant?

March 31st, 2009 -- Posted in Laxatives | 5 Comments »

My fiance is pregnant and she thinks she needs to take a laxative. What kind of laxatives can you take while pregnant?

You really shouldn't, but I guess the safest bet would be to ask her doctor…
Eating foods high in fiber, and drinking lots of liquids (preferably good old H2O) is the best prevention for constipation.

what are your chances after having surgery for diverticulitis?

March 31st, 2009 -- Posted in Diverticulitis | 2 Comments »

I had my sigmoid removed 4 months ago due to diverticulitis, I just found out I have it again. What are my chances that I won't have to have surgery again? I am on the same 2 very strong antibiotics that did not work for me the first time. I am only 32 years old.

if you have a job with a lot of sitting, get up frequently and walk a little bit. You may also prevent it from spreading further by increaing your fluids. Avoid poppy seeds, nuts etc. Increase your fiber as well. Watch everything that you eat and decide if it is healthy before you eat it. Reduce your fats too.

What can I do to help IBS?(Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?

March 31st, 2009 -- Posted in IBS-Irritable Bowel Syndrome | 3 Comments »

I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I can't eat seafood, chocolate, or pork. I went to my family doctor to see what I can do about it. He said just to stay away from those foods for a while so my stomach doesn't reconize it when I eat it again. I was wondering if there was anything I could take to make the pain go away when I eat those foods.

Antispasmodics. Antispasmodics (such as dicyclomine [Bentyl], hyoscyamine [Levsin], and belladonna/phenobarbital [Donnatal]) are a class of drugs that are often prescribed to treat IBS symptoms. These drugs can relax the muscles of the stomach and intestines, and provide relief from abdominal pain. To be effective, antispasmodics are typically taken 30 to 60 minutes before a meal. However, they can also cause side effects such as blurred vision, constipation, decreased sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, and urinary problems.

Peppermint oil. A natural antispasmodic, peppermint can also help reduce spasms in the colon. Peppermint oil can be taken in either capsules or tea. While the capsules are more effective, and have even been approved for use with people with IBS in Germany, they can cause anal irritation. Additionally, peppermint also relaxes the muscles in the esophagus and can contribute to heartburn caused by acid reflux.

Antidepressants. Tricyclic antidepressants (such as amitriptyline [Elavil], nortriptyline [Aventyl], imipramine [Tofranil]) are prescribed to people with IBS in order to treat abdominal pain. However, these agents are typically prescribed in much lower doses than they would be for treating depression. Antidepressants seem to be more helpful when taken at night for people with diarrhea predominant IBS (D-IBS). It may take several weeks of treatment with an antidepressant before it has an effect on abdominal pain.

Heating pad. A simple and inexpensive way of treating abdominal pain is with a home heating pad. Heat can help soothe cramping muscles and provide a source of comfort. Some tips to remember are:

* Never use a sports cream product (such as Icy Hot or Ben-Gay) with a heating pad as it can cause severe burns.
* Don't fall asleep with the heating pad still on.
* Never use a heating pad on bare skin.

How effective or necessary are colon cleansers?

March 31st, 2009 -- Posted in Colon Cleansers | 1 Comment »

If you have a b.m. every day…just how necessary are the advertised colon cleansers? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

They are not necessary but they have great health benefits if done right. I fast twice a year for ten days, on the 3d day I drink a warm salt water mix until i start pooping, it usually comes out very quickly. And even though I eat healthy and I have not eaten for three days you would be surprised at the stuff that comes out that is just sitting in there. I am not trying to be gross, the point is you would be surprised at how hard it is for our body to get rid of the crap we put in it.
