What are some home remedies for constipation?

May 30th, 2009 -- Posted in Constipation | 14 Comments »

I just got out of school and have stopped drinking as much water and stop exercising. Its only been like 5 days but now when I eat my stomach hurts and I have like intestinal pain. I was told it may be constipation, I started drinking more water and moving around more but do you know any home remidies like olive oil or something I would keep around the house?

You need at least 30 % of Fiber in your diet. You will get the Fiber from 100% Bran from the Cerial. and other from your fruits and vegaetalbles you eat every day. That should take care of it and you should not have a problem with constipation any more. You can use olive oil in your cooking, and Fish Oil is good to have in your diet for yout heart. But the Fiber will take care of your problem.

How do laxatives work? What are the mechanics of it?

May 30th, 2009 -- Posted in Laxatives | 1 Comment »

I’m curious about how laxatives actually work… not just a stock answer like “chemicals”, but the actual going-ons in the body in relation to the chemicals that make you go to the bathroom.

I wasnt sure which laxitive you were talking about so I just gave you the web page.

Also I wouldnt suggest taking laxitives. If you have to take anything start with 2 tsp of brown sea salt in a quart of warm water to flush your colon, then I would use products like cascara sagrada to help your colon move better.

When a colon becomes slow it is because the colon is not contracting and moving the food to the end. Laxitives and natural products both help the spasm effect of the colon but OTC and medical products will make your colon dependent on the medication to move your colons if you use it even twice.

How did you change diet with Diverticulitis?

May 30th, 2009 -- Posted in Diverticulitis | 2 Comments »

I just got diagnosed. I am still taking antibiotics. how did you change your diet? I don't know why I got it. I already eat a high fiber diet and do not eat fast food.

My former boyfriend had this, and so did my Grandmother.
You need to just remember to eat healthy foods, vary your intake, and try to avoid things like popcorn, raspberries, strawberries and such which would catch in those "pockets".
Many people don't eat nuts, or anything seedy or fibrous, including whole grain bread or oatmeal. It makes sense to get enough fiber, but the type of fiber makes all the difference.
You will really need to ask your doctor or other practitioner about what to eat.
In both cases, those I knew, just avoided foods they knew would aggravate. They both also took fiber supplements which helped move things along in a more gentle way…
Good luck, you can handle this, and you'll feel much better once your guts get closer to normal.

Is there a under/over the counter cure/prescription for IBS? (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?

May 30th, 2009 -- Posted in IBS-Irritable Bowel Syndrome | 6 Comments »

Just wondering; is the only ONE way to cure it by going on a strict diet of High Fiber, and low-stress, or if already doing so, is there a better and useful way of getting a medicine for it….Any help would be much appreciated!

I have IBS and wasted money on an upper and lower GI. My doctor said to just take Imodium. (anti diareah meds) Take 3 or more at a time. There are prescription drugs but my doctor said since I haven't hit my 30's yet take it because once I go on the prescription I will have to be on it for life.

Also avoid foods with high fat content. Part of IBS is that your body is not capable of breaking down fats and it leaves you gassy and running to the bathroom…

Also cut down on the size of your meals. Symptoms can be eased my eating smaller meals more often.

The sad thing there is no cure, just relief. according to my medical brochures.

Do colon cleansers really work?

May 30th, 2009 -- Posted in Colon Cleansers | 2 Comments »

Or are they dangerous? I need to lose about 10 to 15 pounds. Will colon cleansing boost my weight loss. Please, dont send me product information, I just want to know from real people who have tried it. Thanks.

T he safest way to cleanse your colon is a giant salad!!
Mince a clove of garlic in a bowl and then add tomatoes and cucumbers (his is so the garlic oils don't dry out). Sprinkle salt over and stir. Then add iceburg and maybe red or green leaf lettuce. any other fresh raw vegetables that you like. sprinkle a little more salt and ground black pepper. snap a tight lid on it and shake it up. Put it in the fridge to rest a while. The lettuce is going to wilt up some and it will probable look like half of what you put in there. Make this the last meal that you have in the evening. Eat as much of it as you can. The salt and wilting creates something of a dressing so you may not even add any more. but also any dressing you might want (I use a bit of ranch) Will be streched and you need only add a very little. Happy colon-no invasive or disgusting procedure.

What do you do for constipation when medicines don't work?

May 26th, 2009 -- Posted in Constipation | 4 Comments »

I had never taken medicine for constipation ever, but I was in so much pain that I finally decided to try the medicine. It didn't work at all! In fact, I feel worse. What can I do? I can't afford to go to the doctor. Is this an emergency or life threatening? Or will I eventually go? What other steps can I take?

Forget the Milk of Magnesia and get some Peri-Colace (or generic brand). Take the maximum recommended dose. It is a stimulant laxative combined with a stool softener. One you have relief start taking a stool softener everyday until your diet helps you produce softer stools.

The best way to reduce or eliminate constipation is:
- More water
- More fiber (naturally fibrous foods are best)
- More exercises like walking, running or bike riding

But when the medicines don't work, I take a 1 to 2 quart tap water enema.

Do laxatives help expel calories before they are absorbed?

May 26th, 2009 -- Posted in Laxatives | 4 Comments »

I read that laxatives work in the colon, and do not help your body not to absorb calories, because it is too late. Is this true?

Laxative induce bowel movements. They do not prevent the food from being processed, digested, absorbed, etc. They can help you lose weight because you will basically get diarrhea. This is not healthy for you. There is a new product on the market called Alli. Alli helps prevent fat from being digested. It aids you to learn how to eat healthier. The reason you learn to eat healthier is because then undigested fat is expelled through your digestive track. In other words, if you eat a high fat diet then you will have oily bowel movements. So to prevent that, you start to eat low fat/calorie foods. Not only do you gradually lose weight (within 1-2 weeks you will notive you drop 3-5 pounds) but you will feel better, too. You can get this at most drug stores. It is kind of expensive. But it does work. If stopping your body from absorbing fat is your goal, try this instead of laxitives…

What kind of diet is advisable for a patient with diverticulitis?

May 26th, 2009 -- Posted in Diverticulitis | 1 Comment »

What are the foods to be avoided? what's the reason why?

Can you give a "sample meal plan" (specifically for lunch) that is 700-800 calories. And what is the rationale for the diet?
Please elaborate it. Ty.

This website has some good food info on it:

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/diverticulosis/

I have had good results with the following, which is basically a IBS Diet Cure Plan:

The term IBS covers a wide range of colon issues, so it will suit you too.
